ACADEMIC PORTFOLIO: ENGAGE IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- Demonstrates the disposition for life-long learning and continuous professional development
NARRATIVE:
The coursework for this degree has opened my eyes to so many possibilities for life-long learning! As is evidenced in my artifact for this competency “Reflection on Developing ID Expertise” from EDCI 672, I will always seek to have expertise in the field of instructional design. As I stated in my final paper, my ultimate goal is to “reach the next two ‘higher levels’ of skill acquisition in our field that are characterized by ‘a rapid, fluid, involved kind of behavior’ (Dreyfus & Dreyfus, 1986). The fourth stage of ‘proficiency’ (pp. 27-30) will, no doubt, take many years of experience. I am very much looking forward to the on-going process that may lead me to realm of expertise in instructional design.”
An example of my passion for life-long learning was ignited while taking EDCI 575 (“Foundations of Distance Learning”). During this class, I was inspired to pursue the betterment of learning management systems. In this Final Reflection paper I talk about how I would like to uncover the history and best practices in the field and discover what makes a learning management system unique (including, but not limited to grading management, integrated calendars, assessment and evaluation, affiliations with academic institutions, learning theory frameworks, LMS and computer standards already in existence and an absence of commercial use). Knowing that there are partial solutions out there that can be utilized in a much more creative and effective way, I am compelled to explore new and different options for Learning Management Systems.
While researching my Final Reflection paper for EDCI 513, I became very intrigued with the transfer of knowledge from instructional designer to facilitator. More specifically, I realized how much I would like to explore the visual interpretations and cognitive tools used for this knowledge transfer (including cognitive load and schema theories). This area of interest leads me to question whether I might continue my studies beyond this Masters degree to enable further exploration and research of this topic.
Lastly, I am hoping to learn new software during the creation of my Practicum Project for EDCI 573. To create a guide for Pierce College’s New Class Registration Process, I will be learning Adobe Captivate to create some of the materials. I have always loved the opportunity to learn new software and technology.
